While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
