The Former Congresswoman Establishes a Landmark as First Female Governor

Throughout two and a half centuries, Virginia has had 74 governors, each one of them male. Recently, Abigail Spanberger overcame this historic barrier by being elected as the initial woman to hold the office in Virginia's annals.

Centered Around Economic Concerns and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA operative won with a campaign that stressed cost-of-living issues and strategically challenged Trump-era measures rather than the person.

Background and Education

Hailing from in a New Jersey town on August 7, 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at age 13. Her father was an army veteran who later pursued a career in police work; her mother was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She attended the University of Virginia, earning a diploma in French studies. Upon completing her studies, she worked briefly as a educator before pursuing a career in public service.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” she informed supporters at a rally in Norfolk, Virginia last Saturday.

Professional Path

At the federal agency, she worked cases involving drugs, child predators and financial criminals. She executed legal orders, frequently being the sole female on the arrest team. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and concentrated on national security, serving undercover and internationally.

Family Decision

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, reached a career crossroads. Residing on the west coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They took out a globe and inquired of their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “all our loved ones lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we decided to transition from a federal career, to service to community because she was correct. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in the commonwealth, she joined an advocacy organization, which addresses firearm incidents, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she resolved to campaign for the House, which advisers told her was a “long shot” because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in half a century.

“But I saw what the president was implementing with his authority and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my representative consistently work against the healthcare law. And I knew I had to do something. So spoiler: I won.”

Centrist Approach

In the capital, she quickly became associated with the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of moderate and budget-conscious Democrats. She prioritized specific policies: expanding broadband to the countryside, combating drug trafficking and support for former troops.

She quickly established a standing for working with Republicans and was consistently rated as the most bipartisan member of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt alienated centrists, cautioning her fellow Democrats against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in tight races.

Political Alliance

Along with Representatives a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a part of the “mod squad” in contrast to the left-leaning “squad” of AOC.

State Leadership Bid

In late 2023, she declared she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in the next election.

Her platform highlighted ideas of public service, support for schools and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her CIA background gave her authority on national security issues and she described government work as a calling instead of a career.

Win Over Opponent

This enabled her to counter rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on cultural issues, notably the claim that Spanberger is an radical on individual freedoms and health care for transgender people.

The governor-elect, who consistently argued that communities should decide whether transgender students can join competitive sports, cast her opponent as the candidate more misaligned with the middle of the state's voters.
