New York state AG has introduced a fresh reporting form encouraging citizens to share images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This move comes just a shortly after a major enforcement action shook Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering widespread protests.
A lawmaker disclosed during a news conference that four US citizens were detained and detained for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations broke out in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to live without fear," state officials wrote in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and documented federal operations yesterday, I ask you to share that material with us. We are committed to reviewing these reports and investigating any legal breaches."
The portal offers options to upload photos and videos of the raid, as well as a field to note location information. Before submitting, individuals must tick a option that states that "the office may use any evidence provided in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say involved dozens of government officers, happened in a popular district of Manhattan where counterfeit products and other goods are regularly available in large quantities – frequently to tourists.
Videos of Tuesday's raid show several masked and armed officers securing and holding a individual, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of residents trailed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was also seen traveling down the Manhattan avenues.
In a news conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be arrested for without cause." He noted the individuals were released on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman remarked. "This constitutes a military-style operation to incite tension. It is merely a justification to incite violence for this administration to utilize the troops to stop unrest that they initiated."
Fury over the ICE raid quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates denounced the incident, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the federal government opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, rather than security. It has to end," one mayoral candidate stated.
New York City immigrant rights groups spoke out also.
"Federal officers raided Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, masked agents and protective equipment to go after street vendors trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to citizen protection and everything to do with frightening communities and communities," stated the president of a advocacy group.
Official guidelines bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has stated it will not arrest or detain US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 citizens have been taken illegally by ICE since the beginning of the existing leadership.
ICE raids have been becoming more common in New York and across the US recently.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the present government. Rallies targeting federal operations are widespread including claims of violence and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a submission filed by civil rights groups stated healthcare failures of women with child in detention centers.
