No McKenna Celtic Discussions as Craig Bellamy Commits to Welsh National Team

Both have been linked with the manager's job at the Scottish champions following the former manager's departure on Monday.

The Manager's Stance on The Scottish Club

McKenna referred to the Glasgow giants as "an enormous soccer institution" but stressed he is "deeply involved" of a "extensive rebuilding" with the Championship side.

The mid-thirties assumed control of Portman Road in recent years and led them to the English top flight with back-to-back promotions, but they managed only a handful of victories last campaign as they were relegated back to the second division and they currently sit twelfth place in the Championship.

"There have been such discussions," the London-born ex- Irish young player said when asked about being on the candidate list.

"This isn't a matter I have given any thought to, or where any part of my focus is currently.

"I have a special job here at a special team. And we're at a crucial phase of the season. Everything external hasn't touched my awareness."

Background and Contractual Aspects

Reports indicate that the manager would be willing to talk to the Scottish side given his childhood support.

"Growing up, we all have our preferences," he said when questioned about these. "It's unlikely all people has to publicly and declare what they used to be, but of course it's a really big sports organization."

McKenna agreed to a fresh multi-year deal in 2024 and was asked about his reported £5m release clause.

"Throughout coaching agreements, there are provisions," he responded. "I don't know what my specific terms are and, were I informed, I wouldn't tell you anyway!

"I tackle this job like I will remain Ipswich manager indefinitely. I know that's not invariably going to be the situation, but I will consistently give maximum effort as while I am here."

Bellamy's Position

The former striker played for Celtic on loan from the Magpies in 2005, but the ex- Wales striker is minded to finish the ongoing global tournament campaign, a stance that would practically eliminate the 46-year-old from immediately taking the Celtic job.

Wales are currently third in their World Cup group behind group toppers the Red Devils and second-placed North Macedonia.

Wins over Liechtenstein and North Macedonia in November would book their place in the qualification play-offs, but they are all but assured of making those, thanks to a successful Nations League performance, should they fail to end up their group second place.

Considering his present position, the Wales manager, whose contract expires after the European Championship, would be unavailable until after the play-offs at the earliest.
