New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately following his victory in November.
"My choice was based on our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he added.
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he came from a famous family.
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting very different than his humble Astoria apartment.
With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
