A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind assisted us locate the footage.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the location of where the images originated was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
