Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
